I remember the opening of this McDonald's as well. I grew up about 10 blocks away. Real potatoes peeled and sliced on site and fountain-style milk shake machines. 15 cent hamburgers! Even when I was in high school, you could order a burger, fries and medium coke for 60 cents. It was so worth the risk of leaving a closed campus school to sneak to McDonald's in my friend's car for lunch instead of eating cafeteria food. I remember it was considered a real honor to be a McDonald's employee. The owners only hired students who maintained a high GPA in school --and if your grades slipped, you lost the privilege of working there. Needless to say, times have changed --and the food doesn't have that same appeal for me that it had back then!

I know about this place and I am sure that it has helped many young teen moms, The problem with this place is that it is a poor environment for moms and their children. A friend of mine was in there several years ago and it was dirty and smelled awful. Now there is a young mother who is 18 yrs old has a 15 month old boy and is expecting another child this September. There is a good family and a beautiful home and they are they grandparents of the unborn child. They want her to come and live with them and the father of the baby. The people there are refusing to let her go. I know they have the authority to do this but are refusing. So I have contacted Senator Ron Widen and will be calling the TV stations regarding the injustice and refusal to help this young woman. I am the great grandmother to both these babies and I will not stop at any means to bring this to the attention of the people. My name is Jane and I never give up fighting for anyone that is being help when there is a better place for them to be.

As noted this was originally John Adams High School, built in the late 60's. The original Whitaker Middle School still stands, located at NE 51st and NE Columbia Blvd. The original Whitaker Middle School is now the Native American Youth and Family Center.

Would be nice to have the streets listed so the place could be found with a map, and without a GPS.

I'll share some tidbits many might not know. Portland gets almost as much rain as Seattle does. Seattle gets a bad rap for cloudy weather, but Portland gets that stream of low cloud cover that starts from Alaska and moves down the coast. Their weather isn't much different from Seattle. Also, if you like food trucks, Portland is pure food truck heaven. i've never seen so many food trucks in my life. They are in small circles scattered throughout downtown area with the largest being around 10th and Alder. It's 4 square blocks of food trucks with a couple of additional blocks extending in different directions. The Japanese Garden is for real. I've been to gardens in Kyoto, Tokyo, Seattle and San Francisco. I would say their Japanese garden would measure up to any of the ones in Japan. Voodoo Donuts is the best donut I've ever had, even though the lines are horrifically long sometimes. Buying donut from Voodoo is an event and the lines prove it. People don't wait an hour for a donut for nothing. Huge foodie town.

@Bobby in Utah - Portland isn't a very open city per se. It's just Salt Lake City is just, how to say this in a non offensive way...a bit more conservative? Salt Lake City is a Morman town, with arcane alcohol rules to boot.

I stayed, while pregnant at White Shield between Sept and November 1969. I was 19yo at the time and the best thing (for me) was to keep and raise my son. He is now 45yo and my best friend. I did give him up to foster care for the first two weeks of his life while I made my life changing decision, again the best decision I ever made.
