Ahhh, Portland Brewing! The wonderful memories that magic-filled name conjures up! Days of blending the golden fruits of the Northwest, adding the green, perfumed hops to the copper kettle of love to make a nectar truly deserving of Olympians. Who can blame those that believed the world would beat a path to our door for a mere taste of our alchemy? All was new, the world was our oyster, we couldn't meet the demand!
Meticulous, caring cellermen, carefully checking gravities to ensure the world would have enough yummy, heady ambrosia! The place filled with intoxicating aromas emanating from trough drains that would titillate the taste buds of any member of a brewery tour! Comfortable green jumpsuits emblazoned with the PBCo. logo that we all wore with such pride. Wet socks in black wellies that bothered us not, as our mission, we knew so well, was a divine one! Propane fumes, carbonation, tantalizing aromas wafting from the whirlpool room, the ambiance so fondly recalled like a beautiful woman or a bottle of Bourbon with copious coke.
So much to say, so little time. But who can forget such gems as grain-out, Farmer John or dinner plates covered in uneaten rosemary garlic fries left over from the late-night snackin' of a dedicated brewer? Yeast dumping, the sanitized appearance of the heat exchanger, the technical gymnastics of the bottling line all boggle the mind.
All this will live forever for those lucky enough to have participated in this heaven-on-earth!

Ah PBCo, a place where the saying: "do something, even if it's wrong" was always taken literally. It was a place where wannabe British beers were crafted by wannabe Germans. Its once mighty halls were home to some of the great inspirations of the beer world such as: Porty Forty – Straight to your head, Haystack Black – you’ll never go back, and It was old Mt. Hood (beer) that gave me wood…but at its roots it was about the people – Uncle Otto, Cannonball, Okalahoma Knife Fighter, Picnic with Leendaa, Mr. Mimosa, Night Porter, Little Buddy, Chipdoy, the Malt Discount, the Pig Farmer, and so many more. Ones kaniffle wells up at just the mention of these great names in brewing. PBCo is now all but a footnote in brewing lore…with its passing into history, are we not all in our own way “The Wort Chiller?”

I've lived near NW Glisan and NW 23rd for seventeen years and have never heard this area referred to as the "Alphabet District." Lots of streets run alphabetically, so this is just stupid. This is NW Portland to those of us under the age of 60. The original term for this neighborhood was Nob Hill, which is what you'll hear older folks call it. Hence the Nob Hill Pharmacy, Nob Hill Shoes, Nob Hill Dental, Nob Hill Bar & Grill, Nob Hill Apartments, and Nob Hill Travel. Maybe you'll hear a recent immigrant from California call it some stupid alphabet name, but really this entry should be relabeled. At best "Alphabet District" is tourist speak.
